Repository guide

One photograph. A measurement in context.

A visual aid for recognising documented Shawi foods and portions. This is not a nutrition database or a recommended-serving guide.

How to use it

  1. Find an entry

Search by Spanish, English or Shawi name, or by photo code. Filter by category or cooking method.

  2. Compare photographs

Select a portion and enlarge its image. Where the source provides views with and without peel, both are shown. The spoon provides a visual scale reference.

  3. Read the code and measurements

The table shows every portion in the entry. Always relate the value to its photograph and check notes marked with an asterisk.

What each field means

Photo code
Identifies an image or a labelled unit within it. Letters a, b and c can distinguish units in one photograph. Codes M-001 to M-021 identify the separate kitchenware collection; each object’s note preserves its original number. I- codes are site indexes for the supplementary field inventory; B- codes index Annex B objects, not original photograph or participant codes.
Household measure
The unit, piece, handful, plate or spoonful recorded in the source. Small, medium and large are fieldwork categories, not universal sizes.
Gross / net / waste weight
Values in grams from the original table. Net weight represents the recorded edible part. Values are retained without recalculation; some rows require validation.
Tableware capacity
Volume recorded in millilitres. M-collection values are converted from litres using 1 L = 1000 mL. This is vessel capacity, not the weight of its contents; it is not converted into food grams. Source dimensions and Annex B’s larger/smaller capacities are retained in notes. The basket’s source volume is explicitly approximate.
CMA / PSHB
Utensil and plate identifiers used in the source. They are retained beside the measures and do not mean a spoon or plate of any size.
— / <1
— means a value is unrecorded or withheld for verification; it does not mean zero. <1 means less than one gram in a weight column.

Use carefully, share respectfully.

Each measurement refers to the photographed item, not an average of multiple samples. The source describes adult portions in participating families, not the entire Shawi population. Do not extrapolate to children or turn these weights into medical advice.

Shawi names are retained as recorded. Photographs are published with permission confirmed by the project owner; their availability does not grant an open reuse licence.

Provisional source reconciliation: photos 211–213 are matched to rows with repeated codes 214–216 by anatomical part and photograph sequence. Weights are recorded, not estimated; inferred code corrections are explained in each entry. Unrecorded values remain unavailable.
